What is Central Sleep Apnea?

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. Unlike Obstructive Sleep Apnea, where the airway becomes blocked, CSA occurs when the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe. This condition can significantly impact sleep quality and overall health.

Symptoms of Central Sleep Apnea

The common symptoms of central sleep apnea can include the following:
  • Episodes of stopped breathing or abnormal breathing patterns during sleep
  • Shortness of breath that awakens you from sleep
  • Difficulty staying asleep (insomnia)
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia)
  • Morning headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mood changes, fatigue, or tiredness

Treatment of Central Sleep Apnea

The Central Sleep Apnea treatment can depend on its cause. Some causes of Central Sleep Apnea are often associated with severe illness, particularly an illness in which the lower brainstem — which controls your breathing — is affected. Such conditions include heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure. In addition, certain medications, especially opioids, can cause Central Sleep Apnea.

In many cases, effectively managing the underlying condition can help alleviate the symptoms of CSA. However, specific treatments may be necessary, such as:

CPAP Machine for Central Sleep Apnea: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a common treatment for sleep apnea. The CPAP machine delivers a steady stream of air through a mask that you wear while you sleep. This air flow helps keep your airways open, ensuring that you breathe regularly.

Central Sleep Apnea Device: In some cases, a device that stimulates the nerve to the diaphragm (phrenic nerve) might be an option. This device, similar to a pacemaker, can help regulate your breathing.

Medicine for Central Sleep Apnea: Certain medications can help in treating Central Sleep Apnea. For example, supplemental oxygen, medication to increase your breathing rate, or medication to reduce fluid overload if you have heart failure, may be beneficial.

If you suspect you have Central Sleep Apnea, it’s important to consult with a sleep specialist. We can guide you to the appropriate tests and discuss the best treatment options for you. Remember, there is a cure for Central Sleep Apnea, and with the right treatment, you can manage this condition effectively.
